San Miguel Writers' Conference

The 2020 - 2021 San Miguel Writers' Conference "A Literary Season Online" Writing Contest is NOW CLOSED for submissions.  

Submit your poetry, creative nonfiction, fiction, and Spanish short story for a chance to attend the San Miguel Writers' Conference ‘A Literary Season Online’ free of charge. Four writers will be awarded a “Six Month Scholarship Season Pass” (October 2020 - March 2021). This year we have added a second place prize. Four honorable mention writers will be awarded "Tickets to Two Online Keynote Speakers of their choice." Note: Due to the Covid-19 pandemic we are doing all our events from October to March online.

Submission Deadline: September 14, 2020 (Midnight CDT). 

Winning Submissions will be announced October 1, 2020.

Eligibility, Contestants: The contest is open to anyone writing in English who has not yet published or self-published a book that has sold over 1,000 copies in the genre of application.  Faculty and administrators of the San Miguel Writers' Conference are not eligible to submit to the writing contest. Previous winners of the writing contest cannot submit and win a second time. Note: For the category "International Short Story (Spanish)" submissions should be written predominantly in Spanish.

Eligibility Work: Work submitted must be unpublished. Work may be simultaneously submitted elsewhere, but if it is published or accepted prior to the judging, it will be disqualified from the competition. 

Entry Fee: An entry fee of $30 must be paid for each submission. Note: For the category of "International Short Story (Spanish)" the fee for this year has been set at $20 USD.

Submission Format: The submission and payment process is entirely electronic. No paper manuscripts will be accepted. 

Multiple Submissions: Applicants may submit multiple applications in one or more genres.  However, each application must be complete with entry fee. Each submission must be uploaded separately.

Submission Limits and Format: Prose submissions should not exceed 3,000 words and must be double spaced. Prose submissions may be excerpts from longer works or a  complete story or prose piece, so long as the length limit is adhered to. Poetry submissions should not exceed 5 pages and may include a maximum of 3 poems. The author's name must not appear anywhere in the work, including in headers or footers. Submissions must be in the form of a .doc .docx .odt or .pdf.

Acknowledgments: Each applicant may follow the progress of his or her entry on the submittable site. Each applicant will be emailed the results of the contest, the first week of October, 2020.

Publication:  The San Miguel Writers’ Conference reserves the right to publish winning entries on their website. Published entries will remain on the San Miguel Writers’ Conference website for one year. Winners will be expected to forward a short bio and head shot to the San Miguel Writers’ Conference.

First Place Award: “Six Month Scholarship Season Pass” (October 2020 - March 2021) fee waivers will be granted to one writer in each of the following genres: poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, and international Spanish short story. “Six Month Scholarship Season Pass” includes 12 Keynote Speakers, 6 Literary Events, 6 Late Night Live events, and 1 three-hour workshop of choice. The award is valid only for the specific year of the contest and may not be transferred or exchanged. 

Honorable Mention Award: "Tickets to Two Online Keynote Speakers of their choice" fee waivers will be granted as an Honorable Mention Award to one writer in each of the following genres: poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, and international Spanish short story. The award is valid only for the specific year of the contest and may not be transferred or exchanged. 

Covid-19 Pandemic: The San Miguel Writers’ Conference reserves the right to change "The Award" at any time. This may include changing the award to a “Virtual Package” or "Virtual Tickets," and/ or excluding lodging from the award. Writing Contest Winners will not receive additional compensation or alternative lodging in the case of the Award needs to be changed.

Entry Withdraw: Submissions can be withdrawn from the contest at any time by signing into submittable and clicking withdraw next to the submission. No refunds will be given for withdrawn submissions.

Special Note: Writing contest participants are advised to register for the San Miguel Writers' Conference ‘A Literary Season Online' during the “Early Bard Registration Special” if they would like to receive this discount. Winners of the “Writing Contest” who have already registered for the  2020 - 2021 Literary Season Online will receive a refund of all monies paid.

Concurso Internacional de Cuento 2020 - 2021 (Español)

Participa en el Concurso de Cuento Internacional y podrás participar en la 16a edición del Festival de Escritores y Literatura en San Miguel. El premio consiste en un PASE a la nueva Temporada Literaria en Línea de octubre 11, 2020 a marzo 13, 2021. Este premio es intransferible. 

Fecha Límite: 14 de septiembre de 2020 (Medianoche CDT) 

Formato de Presentación: Las propuestas para el Concurso Internacional de Cuento deben ser predominantemente escritas en español y no deben exceder las 2.000 palabras. Pueden cargarse en los siguientes formatos: doc, docx, pdf, odt.

Previamente no publicado:  Los trabajos presentados debe ser inéditos. La obra puede ser presentada simultáneamente en otro certamen o convocatoria, pero si es aceptada para su publicación en otro lugar, debe ser inmediatamente retirada de esta competencia

Vigencia de la convocatoria: : La medianoche del 14 de septiembre de 2020 es el plazo final para el envío de propuestas.

Cuota de inscripción:  Un costo de recuperación de $20 dólares debe acompañar cada trabajo en prosa.

Cómo enviar:  Sólo se aceptarán los trabajos enviados al sitio web Submittable. El proceso de presentación y pago es totalmente electrónico. No se aceptarán manuscritos en papel.

Envíos a ciegas:  Las propuestas se leerán » a ciegas». El nombre del autor(a) no debe aparecer en ninguna parte de la obra, incluidos los encabezados o pies de página.

Propuestas múltiples:  Los solicitantes pueden enviar varias propuestas en uno o más géneros. Cada envío debe estar completo, debe cargarse por separado en el sitio web Submittable y debe ir acompañado de la cuota de inscripción correspondiente. .

Resultados:  Se notificará a los solicitantes de los resultados la primera semana de octubre de 2020. La decisión de los jueces es inapelable. Usted puede seguir el progreso de su envío en el sitio web Submittable. 

Premio: El premio consistirá en un PASE a la nueva Temporada Literaria en Línea que incluye 12 conferencias magistrales, 6 talleres (en español) de tres horas  de su elección y eventos nocturnos en vivo (en español). El premio se otorgará máximo 2 veces consecutivas por aspirante. 

Retiro de la propuesta:  Los envíos pueden ser retirados del concurso en cualquier momento mediante la firma en submittable y haciendo clic en Retirar junto a la presentación. No se darán reembolsos por las presentaciones retiradas.

Problemas técnicos:  Si tiene problemas para enviar su propuesta, desplácese hasta la parte inferior de la página y haga clic en “Technical Help” (Ayuda técnica). El personal de soporte de Submittable es muy útil si tiene problemas para subir o pagar en línea. 

Nota: Debido a la pandemia de COVID-19, estaremos realizando todos nuestros eventos de octubre 2020 a marzo 2021 en línea. 

Nota especial:  Se recomienda a los participantes en el Concurso Internacional de Cuento en Español que se inscriban a la Conferencia durante el «Early Bird Registration Special» si desean recibir este descuento. Los ganadores de cualquier Concurso de Escritura que se hayan inscrito para el Festival 2021, recibirán un reembolso de todos los fondos pagados .
